A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
