Christantus Uche Ignites Straightforward Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This match provided a chance for several Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were no match even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
