A recent study reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
