Vehicles in Germany's Town Found Smeared with Swastikas in Blood, Police Report

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Police
Police reported they were contacted by a man who discovered a car in Hanau smeared with red-colored fluid

Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Law enforcement then found many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Police state initial examinations indicate the substance was probably human bodily fluid.

"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.

Local authorities said they were working "to resolve the case" and have asked to the public for information.

A senior official said the vandalism made him without words and required to be solved quickly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
